Brentwood is known as a shoppers mecca, with the sprawling Cool Springs Galleria Mall and surrounding shops. Franklin is a well-preserved small Southern town, much of whose architecture is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including a 15-block area of downtown and many stately homes in Williamson County countryside. Among the restored antebellum mansions are the Carnton Plantation, built in 1826; the Carter House, built in 1830, is near the site of the Battle of Franklin. Although Franklin is well-preserved, it is not stuck in time; many chic stores and restaurants are to be found at the Factory at Franklin, as is a theater. Just west of Franklin begins the famous Natchez Trace Parkway, which roughly follows the trail once used by Indians and explorers between Nashville and Natchez, Mississippi. The countryside is beautiful in this area; hiking and biking are popular pastimes, as are equestrian sports: horse shows, steeplechase and western rodeo are annual events.
